As devoted professionals, we see the learning potential in every child.

Every child can learn but every child learns differently. We make it our main concern to discover each child's learning preference, then use proven teaching methods that cater to that child's learning style.

Our entire focus is on your child; therefore we ONLY offer one-on-one tutoring by a highly qualified teacher. We keep abreast of the latest in new techniques that have been proven successful with students who learn differently. Additionally, KIS Education & Research Center is devoted to its own research and development of unique teaching methods.

KIS Education & Research Center's uniqueness is why we are the best choice in helping your child learn math and reading.

Here's what we have to offer you:

1) One-on-One tutoring is offered to maximize learning for
the following reasons:

  • Each student receives undivided attention from the teacher.
  • Working with one student at a time minimizes distractions, which is very important to learning and retention.
  • Lesson plans are individualized to meet the child's learning style and pace.
  • Students are more comfortable in allowing their fears and feelings to be known.
  • Students are more receptive to learning in a "safe" place.
  • Taking the peer pressure off the student enables them to express themselves without fear of embarrassment.

2) A highly qualified teaching staff.

  • All teachers are degreed professionals.
  • Teachers hold various certifications including special education, math and reading.
  • All teachers are trained in multi-sensory mnemonic techniques.
  • Teachers are encouraged to take continuing education classes.
  • All teachers have experience in teaching students with learning differences.
  • All teachers are certified in the KIS Math Solutions© programs.
  • KIS teachers are dedicated and committed to helping your child achieve their goals.

3) A team devoting time to math research and development.

  • A team of teachers devote time to researching new methods and developing new math materials.
  • Updating the techniques utilized by the Center is vital to providing the best and most current teaching methods for the student.
  • Utilizing hands-on materials are important to a students learning. Our teachers provide students with an opportunity to visualize concepts through manipulatives and mnemonics.

4) KIS offers educational testing services by a licensed diagnostician.

  • Our diagnostician, Andrea Adamko, M.Ed., is a learning disabilities specialist.
  • Her extensive diagnostic testing and evaluation is accepted at most schools.
  • Testing is performed at the center.
  • Diagnostic testing is covered by most insurance companies.
  • Andrea can determine whether your child has a learning disability.
  • She can determine at what grade level your child is performing in math and reading.
  • Her report will provide a list of recommendations to help your child receive the services necessary and/or to become proficient at grade level.

What makes our tutoring methods unique?

  1. The focus is on multi-sensory techniques that activate long-term memory.
  2. Activating all five senses invokes the most comprehensive learning.
  3. Students must experience reading for long term results.
  4. A network of mnemonic clues in the form of images, songs, rhymes, stories, chants, and more provide students with a reliable way to learn.
  5. Using programs such as the KIS Math Solutions Modules and the Stevenson Language program allows for experiencing math and reading through manipulatives, stories, familiar images, mnemonic associations, music, rhythm, and rhyme which aids in memory.
  6. These methods create new learning pathways in the brain and sets down reliable memory traces for quick and easy retrieval.

Our math teachers are experts holding various certifications in math and learning disabilities. They have extensive training in assessing math problems and developing successful solutions. The mathematics assessment facilitated by our math teachers is not meant to be diagnostic but for tutoring purposes. If diagnostic testing is necessary, your child will be referred to our licensed diagnostician.

How do we formulate the kind of help your child needs?

We have a 5-phase parent-student interview.
1) In the first phase, the parent provides a “Symptom Profile” to help identify the child’s strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, we evaluate the students’ diet, medication, and activities as possible triggers to learning problems. Considering the whole child is valuable to building our individualized tutoring program.

2) The second phase of the student interview is to administer a “Brain Sidedness” preference survey. Knowing which side of the brain a student favors in learning tells us how information will be processed. This assists us in developing the most successful teaching lessons for your child.

  • How does the student process math information?
  • On which side of the brain does most of their learning occur?
  • Does the student express themselves verbally or nonverbally?
  • Do they take a “Linear” or “Holistic” approach to problem solving?
  • How do they handle tasks – sequentially or randomly?
  • Do they process material symbolically or concretely?
  • Is their decision making based on logic or intuition?

3) The third phase of the student interview is to administer a learning preference survey. There are nine different potential pathways to learning as developed by Howard Gardner. Students prefer to learn in a certain way especially when learning is new, difficult, or stressful. It is beneficial for us to know which methods of learning are predominant so that our teaching focuses on those preferred methods of learning. Which of these does your student possess?

  • Linguistic: (reading, writing, speaking)
  • Logical: (numbers, math, patterns)
  • Spatial: (picture smart, imagination, puzzles)
  • Musical: (sounds, vibration, rhythm)
  • Bodily: (movement, touch, physical activities)
  • Naturalistic: (outdoors, animals, categorizing)
  • Interpersonal: (understands people, communication, people person)
  • Intrapersonal: (works alone, self-paced, follows instincts)
  • Existential: (philosophical, spiritual, contemplates the mysteries of life and death)

The majority of classrooms tend to focus on only two of these methods of learning, linguistic and logical; thus excluding and diminishing the quality of learning for others. These students often transition into resource classes. Determining the way a student learns determines the approach we take in presenting the material to optimize academic learning.

4) The fourth phase of the student interview is to administer a math assessment. Students who struggle are usually missing pieces of the foundation that are needed to build higher level skills. The first step is to discover which skills and sub-skills are missing by assessing their math skills from the beginning.
The assessment in math will show:

  • Missing math skills from kindergarten and up
  • How the student processes information
  • If they can copy easily from a white board
  • The coping skills they use to solve problems
  • If they can discriminate numbers auditorally
  • Their problem solving techniques
  • Writing and tracking disorders
  • Self-control techniques
  • Number reversals or inversions

5) The fifth phase is to develop a report of findings and recommendations to provide the parent. This report will outline what was discovered and a detailed plan for tutoring. The individualized teaching plan will utilize multi- sensory, mnemonic programs such as the KIS Math Solutions Modules. The unique teaching methods that will be incorporated into the lessons will solve many of the discovered learning problems such as:

  • Memory
  • Attention
  • Sequencing
  • Discrimination
  • Organization
  • Language
  • Direction
  • Space

The KIS Math Solutions Modules combines research-based methods with some imaginative strategies that will surprise you. Although this method has always been used in both general and special education, its special strength is its capacity for helping students who otherwise struggle to learn basic skills. The program utilizes multisensory, phonics-based methods, which develop phonemic awareness. It also uses mnemonic clues in remarkable ways to help students with reading difficulties. These unique methods allow students to master word-attack skills and retain information in long term memory.

Our reading teachers are experts holding various certifications in reading and learning disabilities. They have extensive training in assessing reading problems and developing successful solutions. The assessment provided by our reading teachers is not meant to be diagnostic but for tutoring purposes. The report will provide you with a detailed description of skills the student is lacking, the skills that will be worked on during tutoring sessions, and learning styles information. Diagnostic testing is performed by our licensed diagnostician.

The assessment in reading will show:

  • Recognition of symbols and sounds
  • How these symbols and sounds are blended to become words
  • Visualization of words to convey concepts
  • Fluency to comprehend literature
  • The ability to listen
  • Encoding – recognition of symbols blended together
  • Decoding – reading words correctly
  • Comprehension by answering questions verbally, illustrating, or expository writing

4) The fourth phase is to develop a report of findings and recommendations to provide the parent. This report will outline what was discovered and a detailed plan for tutoring.
