In the late 1960's, research discovered that the brain has two very different ways of thinking. The distinct differences of processing information on the left or right side of the brain is known as brain dominance.
Brain dominance affects the way we view our work, hear instructions, and even how we select to complete a task. Student's process information in the dominant side of their brain, so knowing their brain dominance helps to identify their learning style. Knowing your brain dominance enables you to work at strengthening your weaker side. It is necessary for both sides of the brain to work together for success in both the school and work environment. Below are the characteristics of the left and right hemispheres of the brain and how they can affect the student.
Left brain learners possess the following qualities.
- Prefers to work alone
- Takes pieces of information and arranges them in a logical order
- Writes an outline then writes a paper
- Makes lists and schedules, daily planner
- Learns things sequentially
- Easily processes symbols - letters, words & mathematical notations
- Memorizes vocabulary and math formulas
- Draws logical conclusions by putting the pieces together, works out a problem step by step
- In writing pays attention to the mechanics, spelling and punctuation
- Easily expresses self in words
- Follows rules and has a need for rules, understands the consequences for breaking them
Right brain learners possess the following qualities.
- Prefers to work in a group
- Takes the whole thing then breaks it down into pieces, needs to see the overview first
- Writes the paper then writes an outline because it was required
- Randomly does tasks with no order or priority
- Turns in assignments late or incomplete because of distractions from other tasks
- Wants things presented concretely - needs to see, feel, or touch
- Benefits from illustrating notes, drawing math problems and hands-on activities
- Intuition comes into play when solving problems, whatever feels right
- In writing pays attention to the overall meaning
- Has trouble finding the right words to say
- Tends to be oblivious of the rules and the consequences for breaking them
The organizational qualities of the left-brain learner are more conducive to the classroom. The right-brain learner is going to struggle to stay organized, turn in assignments on time, understand math concepts, stay focused during lectures, and to express himself when answering questions. This type of learner will benefit from alternative teaching methods such as mnemonics, concrete presentations, and learning by association.
